May in Shetland
We moved to Shetland 5 months ago and have been renovating an old croft house that was in a state of disrepair. In May we have mostly focussed on our kitchen renovations, building cabinets and painting the walls. But we have also been making changes to the garden, with the edition of a herb/edible bed.
When we're not renovating our house, we also get outdoors to hike, travel and explore the islands that we now call home. This month we have been walking on Melby Beach on the westside of Shetland's mainland, and we have wandered around a beautiful garden near Sand, also on the west side. The gardens are full of mature shrubs and trees, which has given us hope for our half acre garden.
The music in this video has been created by Chris.

This series documents our first year in Shetland, attempting to repair and renovate an old house on half an acre of decorated land. We'll also be exploring the Shetland Islands when we get time. We moved to Shetland from North Wales in January 2024. Each month we'll release a new video to show our progress and how we're adapting to this new life in the UK's most Northern islands. March has been a busy month for us in Shetland. We have started renovations on the kitchen and we've been to explore one of the beaches that features on the popular BBC TV crime drama 'Shetland'. We moved to the Shetland Islands, the most Northerly islands in the UK, at the start of the year. Follow us through our first year in Shetland as we repair our house, design a new garden, explore the b...

February was a cold month in Shetland and things started to go wrong in our house, but we've also started to make progress on the renovations and gardening. In this video, we not only update you about our new home and garden in Shetland, but we'll also show you another two beautiful coastal areas we've been out exploring.

This is our first year in Shetland, having relocated from North Wales. The Shetland Isles are a group of islands off the North East coast of Scotland, with a sub arctic climate. Shetland is so far North that we're actually closer to Norway than most of the UK mainland. We'll be documenting our life here at 60 degress North to show how we adapt to life on these remote islands. Our house requires...
Go Below - An Underground Adventure into a Disused Mine

There are disused mines and quarries scattered across North Wales, some of which are accessible if you have the right qualifications. We went on a guided tour with Go Below, an adventure company in Conwy county and filmed our whole journey through the mine. Bouldering in Lodeve || European Road Trip 2019

We've driven across the Alps and back into the South of France, to a lovely town called Lodeve. The Lodeve Boulders are hidden in a forest with much fewer climbers travel too than Font. When we arrive we have the forest to ourselves! It's not until we unpack our gear that we realise we've left our guide book at the campsite; nevermind! The routes are marked with coloured arrows on the rock, so ...

Interesting video. What a shame you had to introduce cats to the area. Once they have gained confidence in their surroundings they’ll range far and wide - and probably make short work of any nesting birds and chicks. Nice one.

Well, if you were trimming a football pitch or croquet court that mower would be perfect. You’re in for nothing but frustration with your garden though. A mower with 4, 6” wheels would be much more suited for your field cutting. Best of luck!

Enjoying from California your Shetland adventures. If you'd cut it short with a strimmer, then put in a pen around that garden area and kept chickens in it, you'd not have had any work left after a couple of weeks, and it would have been fertilized, to boot!

Hello.. I just watched your April chanel and then watched Jan Feb & March... This is quite an undertaking in a windy, almost barrem, beautiful place. Not sure why you moved here, whether you are keeping sheep, or just looking for a quieter life in the Shetlands. I wish you well in your new adventure, and will keep watching for the progress to come.

Good wishes of happiness & success to you - I'm A Brit from London, now that I'm 84 I do not go anywhere much, but watching other people's adventures is very satisfying. I've done a lot of similar projects to yours over my long life, love fixing up houses, and making gardens, so I will be enjoying this from the US where I've been for 35+ years now. Used to holiday in North Wales over many years when my kids were young, & always loved a streak of the raw, old-fashioned life to make one aware of how hard things were at one time. It's very good for the soul ! Remind yourself of that when it seems too hard on occasion - we can always get a shot of civilization to keep us in balance - in the old days they had to endure the cold & raw life thru all their years ! I remember 'chilblains' when I was a kid in London - damp, drafts & coal fires was quite normal & 'chilblains' was the result in winter. Look it up if you are too young to know what they are ! Best of luck in your endeavors !

Sounds like you've had some difficult setbacks..and at the worst time of year! I hope things start improving for you now and that the warmer weather will help. It would be nice to know a little of your back story if you don't mind sharing? Why Shetland? I assume you had visited the island before you moved there? What made you choose Shetland? Where were you living before? What sort of work does your husband [?] do? Stuff like that..and you have a little one too. It'll be a lovely place for your family to grow up, there's a good community spirit on Shetland I think. We had one of the nicest holidays ever in Shetland, and if we were younger we may have made the same decision you did.😁

Nice video. That mower is a beast. I wouldn't want to fight with it. We have had so much rain that my garden is still delayed until it is dry enough to rototill it and get a few trailer loads of horse manure composte from a neighbor. Please pull all of the nails out of the boards that you have laying down. When Iwas a kid, I fell onto a board with a nail sticking out. when I got up, the board was nailed to my hip. My Dad had to pull it off of me. I don't want that to happen to any of you. Good Luck, Rick

Just looking at the shoulder straps. It seems there isn't much breathable padding used to allow more air on hot summer days. What's your experience with it? Also wondering if the hip pockets are waterproof?

    • @ChrisandCharliesAdventures
      @ChrisandCharliesAdventures Рік тому

It's not as breathable as the Osprey packs, but we haven't taken it out on particularly hot days. We've mostly been out with it on mild, drizzly Welsh days. The hip pockets are fine in drizzle, but you'd probably want more waterproofing if the rain is particularly heavy and you were using them for your phone etc.
